Another day, another round up of records that I played through. I’m having a terrible month, and even though the holiday season should be full of joy and not about anything else, it’s really crappy. I’ve had to deal with a lot of financial troubles, to the point where everything is on hold. At the same time, I’m trying to hire writers to give me more time to work, and I’m trying to establish all sorts of new things to work on for next year. I want it to be the most productive year in terms of writing yet, and at the same time, I’m trying to register for my next set of classes for college. As long as I am enrolled, I can chip away at that coveted master’s degree. They can’t take it away once I get it, so it’s what I am aiming for right now. The following records are a mixed bag, mostly from the 2000s, and do not represent everything I listened to. I took time to listen to a mix tape from an up and coming rapper, listened to the albums reviewed recently, ended the day on a fast note ...

Long Beach Dub Allstars Wonders of The World Still Sounds Crisp After All These Years

March 28, 2015

Download Here I’ve met a lot of Sublime fans in my day. Lots of them know of Sublime’s self-titled, and when I mention these guys, they stare at me with a blank face. I then recommend that they put down the Sublime box set, and pick up this band’s 2001 effort. “Wonders of the World” finds the group putting out their best record , in my opinion. It was the last one, so it's not like I have a long list of options to compare. For those that aren’t aware of this band, you have to go back to 1996. The band was put together after Brad Nowell died of a drug overdose. The band put out a record in 1999, but this is their 2001 release. With this release, the group would put together a lot of mixes from reggae, dub, to sonic ska. The ska sounds were mixed through a lot of members putting their spin on what made Sublime great. THIS IS NOT SUBLIME! Well, it kind of is. The members of Sublime, before they found Rome, put this band together and they put together some great tracks on this...

The Fury of The Aquabats! By The Aquabats (1997) Review

December 17, 2015

The Fury of The Aquabats (1997) From the very first thing that you hear on this record from 1997, you know you’re in for a fun time. The Aquabats are a ska band that got big in the 1990s and are still kicking today. They play a fun type of music where they are superheros and they take on the super villains. The songs all have a fun pace, mixing punk, third wave ska, and lots of great story telling. “The Fury of The Aquabats” was the first major exposure any of us punk kids got to a man by the name of Travis Barker. Surely, you don’t mean Travis Barker of Blink 182 fame, do you Jorge? Yes! That very same guy is on this record playing drums, long before Blink called him up, he was the drummer for this recording, and super group The Aquabats!

Aztec Releases The Best Indie Rock Album Of The Year With Stitches

July 15, 2014

This morning I was excited, I finally got to hear the new Pennywise and the new Rise Against. I has all for it, and despite their releases, I didn’t get the same kind of emotional response I did with “Stitches”. I’m calling Atzec’s release that came out on July 11, as the best independent rock album of the year. 5 tracks and a tear in my right eye, this is iconic. To be fair, my tearing right eye is because I stabbed it with my finger on accident, but that’s ok, tear induced musical response reads better for print. (Not really print) Aztec’s release starts slow, reminding me of Jade Tree’s releases and even some Deep Elm artists that I recall, and is far better than Slow Coming Day’s constant droning that I hated on Tooth and Nail Records. They put together a nice track on “The Benefits of Being Alone”, which to me is an anthem that reminds me of how awesome it was to be back in Los Angeles after a divorce in 2011. It’s the kind of honesty and slow moving song that really captures ...
